Two Methods to Find Their Ring Size at Home

Two Methods to Find Their Ring Size at Home

One of the first things people ask us when they start planning a proposal is:

"Okay… but how am I supposed to know their ring size?"

Sometimes, your partner’s already in on it - maybe you’ve been talking about rings, saving inspo pics, or even designing it together.
Other times, you’re keeping every detail under wraps, and getting their size without them catching on feels impossible.

Either way, our free printable ring sizer makes it easy to get it right at home.

If They’re In On It

When they know a ring is coming, measuring is simple:

  1. Print our guide — set your printer to 100% scale and double-check the test bar on the page to make sure it printed correctly.

  2. Use the first method — measure directly on their finger using the cut-out sizer.

  3. Check more than once — fingers can swell with heat or activity, so measure when they’re at a neutral temperature.

This is the most accurate at-home method - perfect if you’re building something custom together or just finalizing details before the big ask.

If You’re Going for the Surprise

When they have no clue it’s coming, you need a plan that feels natural and still gets you close enough for that picture-perfect moment. These are our go-tos:

1. Recruit a Helper (Our Top Pick)

This one works like a charm. A sibling, best friend, or coworker can casually get their size - maybe under the pretense of their own jewelry shopping. People love talking about rings when it feels like it’s about someone else.

2. Borrow from Another Finger

If they have a ring they wear on their right-hand middle finger, it’s often about half a size bigger than their left-hand ring finger. You can use the second method in our printable ring size guide to measure it. (Don't forget to double-check the test bar so you know the circles are printed true-to-size!) Not an exact method, but usually close enough for the proposal, and we can always make a small size adjustment later.

3. The Casual Jewelry Browse

If you’re out together, wander past a jewelry counter and suggest they try something on “just for fun.” Pay attention when the associate mentions their size.

A Few Quick Tips

  • Always check the scale 📏 Use the test bar on the guide to make sure your printout is accurate.

  • Measure when fingers are neutral 🫶 not after a workout, after a few drinks, or on a hot day.

  • Pick a resizable style 💍 if you’re still unsure - we’ll help you choose.

When the ring slides on effortlessly, the moment feels seamless.
It’s one of those little details that helps the memory feel exactly as you imagined it.
